In the first of a number of major announcements to come in the build-up to next month’s event, Rugby Expo 2018 will welcome senior representatives from Major League Soccer, Formula E and Basketball Champions League, who will share their secrets for establishing successful brands against tough competition and in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
The panel discussion, Succeeding Against The Odds, will look to challenge, inspire and educate delegates from across both codes and provide practical learnings from sports with similar challenges, as rugby fights for its audience, mindshare and media attention.
Senior VP, Ticket Sales & Service – Portland Timbers, Major League Soccer
Established as the highest level of professional soccer in the United States and Canada, MLS launched in 1996 with ten teams. Now 22 years on, Los Angeles FC became the 23rd team to join the league in 2018 and the popularity of MLS continues to soar. Joe Cote will share an unrivalled insight into establishing a successful MLS franchise, and one that has subsequently achieved 125 consecutive regular-season sell outs, alongside record attendances for the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League.
Head of Partnerships – Formula E
The popularity of Formula E since its inception into the motor racing calendar in 2014 continues to rise, with the sport becoming an exciting property for many brands including global technology company and Formula E title partner ABB. Major manufacturers including BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are also starting to invest, with a view to join the series in years to come. David Warren will present on how these partnerships, amongst other facets, seek to further Formula E’s position as a major player in motorsport.
CEO – Basketball Champions League
The Basketball Champions League has brought a successful new era of basketball through its union of the major European leagues and its strategy to embrace social media as its main channel of communication. As a result, in 2017 it was among the fastest growing sports properties and the number one European club competition on Facebook after only 12 months. Patrick Comninos, Basketball Champions League’s CEO, will discuss the impressive rise of the partnership between the FIBA and the 10 major European leagues.
Full details of the event’s Conference Programme will follow over the next ten days.
