EXPOsed – Stuart Abbott, England World Cup Winner
30 Oct 2008
Stuart Abbott is the first of five former Internationals to feature in our exclusive series, EXPOsed, answering questions on his rugby career. Others in the chair will include Robbie Fleck, Bob Skinstad and Jonathan Davies. Read on for more on Stuart’s toughest opponent, best game and his prediction for the Lions in South Africa…
Who is the toughest opponent you have played against?
Brian O’Driscoll – I played against him in the England v Ireland game [Six Nations 2006], he is so strong in defence and quick in attack, he has got all the skills. I would like to have played alongside him in the centres!
What is the best game you have ever played in?
Heineken Cup Final 2004, Wasps versus Toulouse. It was the best finish to a game I have ever seen with Rob [Howley] scoring in the last minute. It was a great feeling to be part of Wasps’ first European Cup win, especially beating the mighty Toulouse.
One thing you would change about rugby…
I would like to see the introduction of a Global Season.
Lions series prediction…
It’s going to be tough to beat the Springboks on their home patch and after the disappointment of the last Lions tour, to New Zealand, you would have to back South Africa. Also, the Boks will want revenge for 1997 which will make them even harder to beat. 2-1 South Africa.
What are you doing these days?
I coach the backs at Rosslyn Park, which I’m really enjoying; the boys are doing well – 3rd in the league. I also work for an events and marketing company in South Africa and I am a consultant for Rugby Expo.
How do you think Rugby Expo will benefit rugby?
I think rugby has needed something like this for some time as it is a great way to get everyone together from around the world and discuss rugby. Getting all the major businesses, clubs and sponsors under one roof will keep rugby moving in the right direction.
